My Dragon Story

Here is an excerpt from the dragon story I am writing! Hope you like it!

Birds chirped outside the hollow, and although they would make tasty snacks, none of the dragons pursued them. Today was a warm-wind day, which meant that prey would be plentiful. Alnania ducked under the stalactites and emerged into the sun. It swept down her limbs, obliterating the chill that had been dominating her body in the cave. Alnania swiveled her head as she heard Korcata’s signature roar, meaning that if she kept him waiting any longer he would go alone. Pumping her sparkling wings, the gold dragon swooped up and then down over the wall of rock. She quickly spotted Korcata, for his blood-red scales were a splash of color against the boulders. As she had expected, his gruff voice shrewdly sliced her ears.
“What kept you? If you had been any later all the prey would have died of old age! We have a tribe to feed you know!”
Alnania dipped her head, accustomed to her leader’s rampages. The two lifted off with a majestic beating of wings, and gold clashed with red as the pair soared up into the wind currents. Alnania relished the fresh wind that drove into her face, and she crowed joyously. Korcata grunted but said nothing. Glancing down, Alnania surveyed the vast plains of green and the rocky clusters of their territory. Life is beautiful, she speculated.
Suddenly Korcata rumbled and dived, and as she followed his gaze Alnania beheld a rippling herd of antelope on a hill not too far off. Wheeling, she sped after her leader and soon hovered over the antelope. They galloped westward, knowing full well that if they did not stay in the pack they would be picked off. Korcata eyed the group and circled them, waiting for them to break apart. When nothing transpired, an idea popped into the young dragon’s head and Alnania charged downward, flattening her wings against her body. She forged a path through the horde of antelope, and they scattered, eyes wide with fear and foam flecking their mouths. Taking advantage of this, Korcata swooped and lifted off with a muscular buck. It thrashed and kicked, but soon Korcata’s claws did their work and it slumped in his iron grip. Alnania chose for herself a willowy female, and though she hated killing beasts, it was nature’s way and the dragons had to eat. The rest of the herd trembled and shot away, their hooves sending up clods of dirt.
Alnania sidled up to Korcata and they retreated, not the least bit weighed down by their catch. The two banked and shot away in the direction of camp, brushing the tops of maples gently and side-swiping the slender birches. As they sped by the vast expanses of trees, Korcata rumbled, “Not enough meat on this buck! Scrawny little thing.” Alnania laughed and somersaulted cheerfully; ignoring the disgusted stares she drew from her leader.
